  General Notes:

He was a housewright, settled first in Lancaster, N. H. where he built the Methodist Parsonage and for a time occupied rooms in it. He moved to Augusta, Maine at the time of the Madawaska war and was employed in the commissary department; later, he lived in Gardiner and in Lawrence, Mass. He came to Portland in May 1848 and as a foreman for George Worcester, superintended the building of a large brick school-house that was, later, taken down to give a place for a residence for the Bishop of Portland. The next year he was employed by F. O. J. Smith as caretaker of is real estate, consisting of the Umpire Block, several stores and dwelling houses. The Umpire Block was on Union street and in it was the Theatre, Umpire Hall, a news-paper office, (The Umpire, a daily political, published by Mr. Smith.) the telegraph office, etc. Mr. Smith was early associated with Prof.. Morse and contributed largely to the introduction of his system of telegraphy. He was the promoter of the first line between Boston and Portland; Mr. P. was employed in its construction and for twenty-six years continued to superintend the construction and repairs of telegraph lines, through various changes, up to is death, at which time he was in the employ of the Western Union Co. 18

Samuel married Sabrina Perkins, daughter of Benjamin Garland Perkins and Francis Cushing, in November 1830.18 (Sabrina Perkins was born on 10 October 1812 18 and died on 18 July 1889 18.)
