He was very influential in political affairs. He held various town offices, was Postmaster, ten terms a Representative in the Legislature, a member of the Constitutional Convention and, by popular vote, was made a memberof the first Board of Railroad Commissioners of N. H. 18
Benjamin married Rebecca Demick Ingerson, daughter of John Ingerson and Eleanor Holmes, on 18 June 1829.18 (Rebecca Demick Ingerson was born on 10 October 1808 18 and died on 10 March 1890 18.)
